Keep Those Resolutions Going!

Resolutions Header

Did you know that only 9% of Americans that make New Year’s resolutions complete them? Research shows that 23% of people quit their resolution by the end of the first week, and 43% quit by the end of January (OSU.edu).

One of the main reasons resolutions fail is because some people make goals that are too big. New Year’s Resolutions, like goals, need to be measurable in order to be attainable. This means that breaking down big goals into smaller, bite-size pieces can help you stick to them. Try writing down your goals and see if you can break it down into specific, smaller goals. For example, if your goals is to be more active, try creating a weekly workout schedule. This will help you know exactly what you have to do every day to reach those milestones.

Another goal-setting tip is to be as specific as possible. For example, if your goal is to eat healthier, what does that mean to you? Do you want to eat less sugar; would you like to lose weight or manage conditions such as diabetes or heart disease; are you trying to eat less processed foods and more whole foods? Being specific with your goal is imperative to creating a game plan that you can follow.

Motivation is a key factor in making lasting resolutions. You may think that motivation magically appears if you want something hard enough, but that is not the case. Motivation actually stems from taking action towards your goals every day. This is because seeing results will make you excited to keep working at it. Motivation can be something as simple as a sense of pride for completing a task or journaling about reaching a milestone. Finding internal motivation is key to making those resolutions stick, but sometimes external motivators can help give you a boost. If you complete a goal, try rewarding yourself with a yummy treat, buy yourself a gift, or participate in a fun or relaxing activity (i.e. take a bath, play a game, go to a movie).
